BANG! festival is an extraordinary festival combining visual arts with music, performances, acts etcetera etcetera etcetera.

Curator Joris Van De Moortel assigned each evening with a proverb used by Pieter Brueghel in his Twelve Proverbs (1558) and a musical key. I was asked to work with the expression ‘parels voor de zwijnen’ (pearls before swine). This evening was centred around ‘the voice’.

Since Pieter Brueghel the Elder lived in a time in which polyphonic was booming business, I worked out an evening focussing on nothing but the voice. The location was a church, which made it logical to opt for working with a choir.

The plan:
A choir trains 6 chords and holds it for a very long time. For each of the chords, I invited a guest to perform a solo on top of the chord. This of course all very contemporarily. The soloists were 2 performance artists, 2 pop musicians, curator and visual artist Joris Van De Moortel and myself, who made the composition and contributed to all of the voices. Two of the soloists brought a drummer.
