About Konvooi Festival:

"Amid the clanging cacophony of cranes and towering container ships, the vastness of an old industrial harbor in Bruges will soon flourish into a lush creative oasis, hosting the first ever edition of the multidisciplinary in-situ arts festival KONVOOI, the most recent creative venture of Het Entrepot. With windmills dotting the late-summer skyline, a synergy of art, music, theatre and performance aims to shed new light on Bruges’ industrial landscape. In preparation for the festival, we caught up with five artist collectives who were given carte blanche to curate the festival and build an innovative art-route along the harbor. Meet Kolijn Jagersma, studio mxmxm, PLAN B, f.o.t.a. and Astrid Collective, the creative talents behind Het Entrepot's wonderfest KONVOOI."

For KONVOOI, we wanted to make a series of sport events where we could integrate art and sport. A lot of people value sports, but don’t see the value of art. By making a work in the language people already understand, we can trick them into participating in an artwork. While we were working on the series, I came across the work of Ilke Gers. She was already doing something that was in line with what we wanted to do, so, in collaboration with Ilke, we decided to divide our work for KONVOOI in three parts.

On Friday, there was a performance called Shadow Tennis. It’s a tennis match without a ball. Two performers, a referee and a commentator are playing tennis and the audience gets instructed on whom they should cheer for. The performers were Katinka De Jonge & Marius Lefevre. Ilke was the referee & I controlled the sound effects & the scoreboard. It became a very surreal performance where people were cheering for an imaginary tennis game. The game was an improvisation with certain instructions or events that could happen during the game. Ilke could control the points because she had the microphone. But there was also a discussion about a ball that went ‘in or out’, a fake injury, and to end the game we said the rain was too intense to continue the match.
Ilke designed the fields smartly. It started out as a conventional tennis court, but as she puts new lines on the floor each day, the field gradually transforms. The second day was all about participation. During our slowest bike ride, people have to go as slow as possible over the finish line without putting their feet on the ground. Again this became a very surreal event, where people didn't have to be the fastest or best in a certain sport. On the last day, there was a football game with three gates instead of two. There was a tribune, a smoke machine, lights, music, football shirts, flags, prices and more.
