Under the title ‘Momentum #3’, the workshop for new theatre talent d e t h e a t e r m a k e r this year takes over part of deSingel for a third time. Once again, there will be a great many of them, and they will be taking up residence on the huge balcony at the rear of our building, with a view over the motorway. There they will construct an off space, a temporary space, or why not call it ‘a theatre’? They will draw inspiration for this from a society in transition, and from the current controversy surrounding reforms within arts institutions. The Volksbühne, founded in 1890, which was originally located in East Berlin, captures their imagination. Over the past year there have also been wide-ranging reforms within this ‘theatre of the people’, which have unleashed an international debate. Where does theatre stand today, what does it represent, and what might it look like were we to collaboratively rethink it and shape it today? These are the questions that these makers will be asking themselves. One thing’s for sure: here is a new generation of socially aware and critical theatre makers who are creative, stubborn and desirous of change. This year, d e t h e a t e r m a k e r celebrates its tenth birthday, so as well as theatre and debate, you can confidently expect a party.
